Building the Skills for Your Success

Laurel and Associates, Ltd. provides an ongoing suite of train-the-trainer and curriculum design services, all of which are based on the UCLA Mastery Teaching Model developed by Dr. Madeline Hunter.

TRAIN THE TRAINER

  • A FOUR-DAY TECHNICAL TRAIN-THE-TRAINER WORKSHOP
Target Group: Individuals with technical expertise now responsible for creating and presenting technical training.
The first day introduces adult learning principles and provide practice in curriculum design and planning techniques. The second day introduces different learning styles and how to design and facilitate a variety of instructional methods and audiovisual aids.
The third day introduces platform presentation and group facilitation skills, with an opportunity to practice and be critiqued by the other participants and videotaped for the post-workshop review of the participants in concert with the written critiques from their peers.
The fourth day allows the participants to practice delivering brief participantentered training modules that they have designed, using the design model from the first day. This delivery practice is critiqued by the other participants and videotaped, for the post-workshop review of the participants in concert with the written critiques from their peers.

  • A FOUR-DAY ACCELERATED LEARNING TRAIN-THE-TRAINER WORKSHOP
Target Group: Individuals interested in applying accelerated learning techniques in their in-house training design and presentation.
This is similar in format to the technical train-the-trainer. However, it incorporates the use of metaphor, music, and other accelerated learning methods.

  • AN INTENSIVE TWO-DAY TRAINING DESIGN WORKSHOP
Target Group: Individuals responsible for creating in-house training materials. The first day focuses on techniques to identify content areas, create a lesson plan, and select instructional methods. The second day provides hands-on development of actual training exercises and handouts for use in the participants’ scheduled training programs.

  • A TWO-DAY PERSUASIVE PRESENTATION WORKSHOP
Target Group: Individuals responsible for making presentations to persuade potential clients to do business with their company and/or to persuade their management to adopt controversial policies.
The first day focuses on tips to overcome the six major speaking faults, describes seven different ways to organize a presentation, and provides practice in organizing and preparing a brief persuasive presentation. The second day provides an opportunity for the participants to make a series of impromptu and planned presentations, which is videotaped for their later review and constructively critiqued by the other participants.

  • A TWO-DAY TRAINING AUDIT WORKSHOP
Target Group: Individuals responsible for auditing technical training programs in order to certify instructors and/or ensure quality assurance.
The first day is devoted to increasing the participants' working knowledge of what is involved in developing and presenting an effective training program. Using the UCLA Mastery Teaching Model, it enables them to experience and assess the professional instructional decisions and techniques that research has demonstrated will accelerate and improve adult learning.
Once the participants understand what to look for when auditing a training program, the second day includes interactive exercises and simulations that allow the participants to apply Mastery Teaching concepts in the audit and assessment of real training case samples.
CURRICULUM DESIGN SERVICES

  • ON-SITE CURRICULUM DEVELOPMENT
Target Group: Organizations that require curriculum development or redesign for internal classroom training programs.
Curriculum design services include: (1) conducting a needs assessment and/or (2) reviewing existing training materials and activities.
Once the training needs and goals have been identified, the consultant works with internal subject matter experts to: (3) identify and outline the content for the training modules and the training format, and (4) develop the training module content and participant activities.
The consultant then develops: (5) the participant packet and (6) an annotated trainer's manual. This package of services can also include (7) working with the presenters to master the presentation of the curriculum. This frequently involves a general on-site Train-the-Trainer program and/or a curriculum-specific Trainer Certification program.

  • ON-SITE TRAINING AUDITS
Target Group: Organizations that are concerned about the quality and costeffectiveness of their classroom training.
This service involves auditing in-house technical training programs in order to certify instructors and/or ensure quality assurance. A collaborative approach is used to work with existing trainers to review and improve their training decisions regarding content, learner activities, platform skills, and group facilitation.
