The Question
by Deborah Laurel

To favor them so they flourish and fly;
to choke them so they crash and burn;
or to slight them so they stall and die-that
is the question.

Whether ‘tis nobler
to smile, nod approval,
give kind encouragement,
and applaud new possibility:
allowing them to test their wings,
fly ever bolder, ever higher, and
eventually farther than the eye can see.

Or to frown, to sigh,
to mutter dark disappointment,
diminish every effort,
and dash any dream of flight:
keeping them land-bound, anxious,
and so weighted down
that they no longer want to try.

Or simply- to do nothing,
say nothing, and
acknowledge nothing-until
all is nothingness:
leaving them alone, on their own,
unnoticed, neglected, and forgotten,
‘til they wither away in well-worn tracks.
