Building Consensus on Sticky Issues

Workshop Description:
This one day workshop provides a six step model for reaching consensus on sensitive issues. It uses interactive exercises so that the participants can experience the group problem solving and decision making techniques necessary to depersonalize the issue, determine objective concerns, generate acceptable options, and make a group decision. As a result, they will leave the workshop with two products: (1)a decision regarding the sensitive issue and (2) a model to use in resolving future sensitive issues.

Learning Objectives:

Class participants will:

  1. identify the six step consensus building model;
  2. identify the problem;
  3. depersonalize the problem by relating it to mutually acceptable guidelines or standards;
  4. use the cause and effect diagram and the is/is not matrix to identify root causes of the problem and determine when the problem is important;
  5. use nominal group technique to identify options to solve the problem and make decisions;
  6. explain why it is important to document and communicate a decision;
  7. assess the consensus-building model and make necessary modifications;
  8. identify their strengths and challenges in consensus building; and
  9. commit to specific actions to meet those challenges.
